History of World Snow Day
Snow days are a cherished tradition for school children around the world. But where did this tradition come from? World Snow Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in January and it is a time to enjoy the winter weather and have some fun in the snow.
The origins of World Snow Day can be traced back to two events that took place in Sweden in the early 1990s. The first was the “Skidorkning” or “Skiing Downhill” event which saw skiers racing down a hill in downtown Stockholm. The second event was called “Vinterveckan” or “Winter Week” and it was held in the town of Mora. This week-long event included skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and other winter activities.
In 2005, the International Ski Federation (FIS) decided to launch an official World Snow Day. The aim of this day was to encourage people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the winter weather. And what better way to do that than by going for a ski or a snowboard?
Since its inception, World Snow Day has been held in over 20 countries around the world. And each year, more and more people are getting involved. So if you’re looking for something fun to do on a cold winter’s day, why not head out into the snow and have some fun!
The Goal and Mission of World Snow Day
The Goal and Mission of World Snow Day is to provide a fun, safe and accessible day of snow activities for all ages. In doing so, we hope to inspire people to appreciate the winter environment and enjoy the many recreational opportunities that snow provides.
Our mission is two-fold:
To get as many people as possible – both kids and adults – outside to play in the snow; and
To promote responsible environmental stewardship by working with event organizers to offset carbon emissions associated with World Snow Day events.
By providing cost-friendly, accessible and fun snow activities, we aim to inspire and foster the next generation of snow sport enthusiasts by connecting all winter sports communities worldwide.
