On January 24th, 1922, Christian K. Nelson, an Iowan ice cream vendor, created the world’s first chocolate-covered ice cream sandwich, the Eskimo Pie.
Now known as Eskimo Pie Day, it’s a time to celebrate our love for sweet treats everywhere!
What is Eskimo Pie Day?
Eskimo Pie Day is a holiday in the United States that celebrates the delicious chocolate-covered ice cream treat. It is observed on January 24th each year.
The Eskimo Pie was created by Christian Kent Nelson in 1922. He was inspired by a Native American woman who wrapped an ice cream bar in seal skin to keep it from melting.
Nelson applied for a patent for his ‘Ice Cream Mold and Package’ on May 24, 1922. The patent was granted on December 12, 1922. Nelson then founded the Eskimo Pie Corporation to mass-produce his invention.
Eskimo Pies were an instant hit and soon became a staple of American childhood. In 1925, more than 20 million Eskimo Pies were sold! Today, they are still a popular treat, especially with kids.
So what are you waiting for? Get out there and celebrate Eskimo Pie Day!
History of the Eskimo Pie
The Eskimo Pie was created by Christian Kent Nelson in 1920. Nelson was born on a farm in rural Iowa and later moved to Onawa, where he worked as a candy maker. One day, while working at his candy store, he had the idea to create a chocolate-covered ice cream bar. He took his idea to a local ice cream shop, where they made the first batch of Eskimo Pies.
The original Eskimo Pie was made with vanilla ice cream and covered in dark chocolate. It was an instant hit, and soon Nelson began mass-producing the pies. He eventually sold the rights to the Eskimo Pie Corporation for $1 million. Today, there are many different flavors and varieties of Eskimo Pies available; however, the original dark chocolate flavor is still the bestseller.
Unique Ingredients and Flavors
The Eskimo Pie is a chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bar coated in a chocolate shell. It was created by Christian Kent Nelson in 1922.
The pie gets its name from the Inuit people of Alaska, who are also known as Eskimos. The word ‘pie’ refers to the way the ice cream is cut into wedges and served.
The unique flavor of the pie comes from the combination of chocolate and vanilla. The chocolate shell gives the pie a rich flavor, while the vanilla ice cream inside is creamy and sweet.
The Eskimo Pie has been a popular dessert for over 90 years. It is one of the first commercially available ice cream bars and it continues to be one of America’s favorite desserts.
Making Your Own Eskimo Pie
Ingredients:
1. 1 quart ice cream
2. 1 package Oreos
3. 1/4 cup butter
4. 1 tablespoon sugar
5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6. 1/2 cup chocolate chips
7. 1/4 cup heavy cream
8. 9 inch pie pan
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and butter a 9 inch pie pan with the softened butter. Then, in a food processor or blender, crush the Oreos into fine crumbs and mix with the sugar until well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and press evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Be sure to pack it tightly! Place in the freezer for 10 minutes to set.
2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine ice cream, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips until smooth. Pour mixture into prepared crust and spread evenly with a spatula?s edge or spoon handle (dip in hot water first to prevent sticking). Freeze for several hours or overnight until solidified.
3. To make topping, melt together heavy cream and remaining chocolate chips over low heat stirring frequently until sauce is smooth (or microwave at 50% power for 1-2 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool slightly before spooning over top of pie in an even layer letting it drip down the sides a bit (you can also do this by pouring it into a zip-top bag and snipping off one corner). Place back in freezer for 15-20 minutes more to set.
4. Serve frozen! Once it’s thawed, the texture will be very soft and melty. Enjoy!
