Dungeons & Dragons Day is a day to celebrate the gaming world and its fans. It’s also a day for people to geek out about their favorite hobby.

D&D Fantasy Game was designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson and published in 1974. Since then, Dungeons & Dragons has grown into an international phenomenon with millions of players worldwide.

The game’s popularity peaked in 1980s with over 1 million players worldwide at its peak in 1985. It has since been adapted into a variety of media including comic books, films, novels, video games, card games and television series. The game has been translated into many languages beyond the original English.

The game was first released as a boxed set including three booklets, six dice, two sheets of maps, and one booklet describing the town of Greyhawk. In 1975, when the rules became more complex than could be contained in a single volume, a second box set was made available which contained all the rules from the first edition, plus a supplement called Greyhawk. In 1977, the first hardcover edition of Dungeons & Dragons was published by TSR Inc., beginning with Giant’s Bane (TSR 1025). This book included a fold-out color map of the Known World, showing the location of most major sites at that time; this map was later reprinted in The Dragon #7 (March 1979).

The term “Dungeons & Dragons” was trademarked by TSR in 1977 after they won a lawsuit against Dungeon! developer Donald R. Kaye. The first edition of the game was published in 1974; it went through several iterations before it reached its current form as a tabletop roleplaying game (RPG). The current iteration is Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition (5e), which was released in 2014 after years of delays.
