EU Member States and lawmakers have recently reached a groundbreaking agreement to revolutionize the Schengen visa system through digitalization. The decision entails a significant shift away from physical visa stickers in passports, paving the way for a predominantly digital process. Matjaz Nemec, the leading MEP on the matter, emphasizes that once the new law is formally adopted, the majority of applicants will be able to conveniently apply for visas online, resulting in a more user-friendly, cost-effective, and expeditious process.
The advantages of this digital transformation go beyond mere convenience. Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden’s Migration Minister, highlights the paramount importance of enhancing security within the Schengen area. By mitigating the risks associated with visa sticker forgery and theft, the new digital system will substantially bolster security measures. Currently, the Schengen area encompasses almost all EU member countries, with the exception of Cyprus, Ireland, Bulgaria, and Romania, the latter two of which are expected to join in the future.
Traditionally, individuals requiring a visa had to obtain a physical Schengen sticker for their passport. However, ongoing efforts to embrace digitalization are reshaping the visa system, aiming for a more streamlined and secure process. Taking inspiration from successful implementations in countries like Australia, the EU aims to directly link online visas to travelers’ passports, eliminating the need for physical stickers altogether.
Under the forthcoming EU system, visa applicants will enjoy the convenience of uploading necessary documents and paying processing fees online. While this digital leap will greatly simplify the process, certain circumstances, such as first-time applicants or individuals with new passports or updated biometric data, may still necessitate an in-person appointment at a consulate or visa office. This personalized approach ensures the integrity of the visa application process while accommodating the diverse needs of travelers.
The EU’s decision to transform the Schengen visa system into a primarily digital process marks a significant step toward modernization, convenience, and heightened security.
